12 km from Guardavalle to Bivongi. A country road on a cliff above the Assi, a wide fiumara almost dry in summer, runs among olives, holm oaks and eucalyptus; in spring watch for bee-eaters nesting in the rock. Across the river you climb to the 11th century monastery of San Giovanni Theristis, where a small community of Romanian Orthodox monks still lives, pass the ruins of Santi Apostoli and cross the Vina bridge on the Stilaro into Bivongi. The operator advises April to November, as the Assi can flood in winter.
