A loop of about 65 km from Rieti around the Valle Santa, the valley Saint Francis loved, on the waymarked Cammino di Francesco. Three days link the four Franciscan sanctuaries: Fonte Colombo, where he dictated his Rule; Greccio, where he staged the first nativity; Poggio Bustone, where his story in the valley began; and La Foresta in the woods above Rieti. Between them the path climbs through olive groves and oak woods, crosses the reed beds and lakes on the valley floor, and passes the stone villages of Contigliano and Cantalice. Best from April to June and September to October.
