From the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, the route follows the old medieval road through the city's historic core towards Bitetto. It passes the fortified hamlet of Balsignano and the Chiesa di San Felice before crossing ancient olive groves on the approach to town. Bitetto is entered through Porta Barese, its last surviving medieval gate, close to the Cattedrale di San Michele Arcangelo.
